FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the questions people ask most about running, using and contributing to Trycord.

What is Trycord?

Trycord is a self-hostable community messaging platform. It is open source, runs on your own hardware, and gives communities control over their data, their rules and their communication.

How do I run my own instance?

Clone the repository, install dependencies, and start the server. The documentation walks through every step, including database configuration, mail setup and reverse proxying.

Is there a hosted version?

There is one official instance, at trycord.dev, and it is run by the project. It is not a service with plans and a sign-up wall: it is one instance among the ones anyone may run, and nothing in the software depends on it. Every other instance is operated by whoever runs it, and your account, your communities and your messages live on the instance you chose and nowhere else. The demo lets you try the interface without an account at all.

What databases are supported?

SQLite (default, zero configuration), MySQL and PostgreSQL. The database is a configuration profile, so moving between them is an environment change rather than a different build.

How does voice and video work?

Trycord includes an in-house STUN/TURN server and a peer-to-peer WebRTC mesh for small groups. Voice is off by default and must be enabled by the instance operator. No third-party media service is required.

Can I federate with other instances?

Cross-instance federation (Continuum) exists as a setting and a shared vocabulary, but it is not yet a working federation of separate servers. It is off by default.

How do I report a bug or request a feature?

Open an issue on GitHub. Security vulnerabilities should be reported privately (see the security page).

What licence is Trycord released under?

MIT. You can use, modify and distribute it freely. See the licences page for details.

How do I update my instance?

Pull the latest code, rebuild, and restart. The changelog records what changed. Database migrations run automatically on startup.

Can I theme Trycord?

Yes. Custom themes work by writing the same design tokens the product uses. The documentation covers theming in detail.
